Emerging Drugs for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

Details

This Horizon Scan summarizes available information regarding emerging drug therapies for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). ALS is a progressive and fatal neurogenerative disease characterized by muscle weakness and wasting. The scan primarily focuses on emerging drugs that have completed phase II of their clinical development: fasudil, ibudilast, inosine, and masitinib. The combination of sodium phenylbutyrate and taurursodiol has reached advanced clinical development; however, it is not discussed in this scan as it is currently under review at Canada's Drug Agency.

Emerging Drugs for Generalized Myasthenia Gravis

Details

This Horizon Scan summarizes the available information regarding emerging targeted therapies for the treatment of generalized myasthenia gravis. Myasthenia gravis is a rare and chronic autoimmune disease in which autoantibodies attack specific proteins in the neuromuscular junction, resulting in muscle weakness. In this scan, we have reviewed 6 new treatment strategies that target specific areas of the immune system involved in the pathogenesis of myasthenia gravis: efgartigimod, rozanolixizumab, zilucoplan, ravulizumab, batoclimab, and nipocalimab.

An Overview of Smartphone Apps

Details

Health-based mobile applications (“mHealth”) are downloadable applications on a smartphone or similar device for use in health care, either by the person directly using it or by a health care provider. This Horizon Scan summarizes the available information and provides an overview of health apps on smartphones that are not connected to specialized medical equipment, describing examples of emerging apps in different clinical areas, who they might benefit, and their operational issues.

Self-Sampling Devices for HPV Testing

Details

This Horizon Scan summarizes the available information regarding the use of self-sampling devices for HPV testing as part of cervical cancer screening programs.

HPV testing for primary cervical cancer screening is not currently a part of any Canadian screening programs. However, several provinces are in the process of implementation and some pilot testing.

Self-sampling is generally as accurate as clinician-collected sampling for HPV testing.

Self-sampling devices for HPV testing could likely be used to increase participation in cervical cancer screening programs.

An Overview of Emerging Point-of-Care Tests for Differentiating Bacterial and Viral Infections

Details

Antimicrobial resistance is an important health concern in Canada and across the world. A key driver of antimicrobial resistance is the unnecessary use of antibiotics because of diagnostic uncertainty. Emerging health technologies may reduce diagnostic uncertainty of acute infections at the point of care and may help support antibiotic stewardship programs if the tests demonstrate clinical benefit and cost-effectiveness for health systems.

Portable Neuromodulation Stimulator for chronic balance or gait impairment

Details

This Horizon Scanning report summarizes information regarding an emerging health technology — the Portable Neuromodulation Simulator, or PoNS — designed to supplement physical therapy and improve chronic balance and/or gait impairment for patients with mild-to-moderate symptoms from multiple sclerosis or from a mild-to-moderate traumatic brain injury.

Neuromodulation Technologies for the Treatment of Alzheimer Disease

Details

There are not very many effective treatment options for Alzheimer disease and most of the options have side effects for many people, and temporarily reduce symptoms rather than delay disease progression. Effective treatments with minimal side effects that prevent and reduce the severity of Alzheimer disease are needed.
