Early Intervention Programs for Adolescents and Young Adults With Eating Disorders

Details

Eating disorders are serious but treatable conditions with the highest mortality rates among mental health disorders, accounting for approximately 10% to 15% of mental illness deaths. According to a Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) report, hospitalizations for young females with eating disorders increased by more than 50% during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Emergency Department Overcrowding in Canada: An Update

Details

Emergency  departments (EDs) across Canada are under strain and experiencing overcrowding, a situation in which the demand for health services in the ED exceeds the capacity of the ED, hospital, or community to deliver quality care in a reasonable amount of time. Recent evidence suggests that ED overcrowding is worsening in jurisdictions across Canada. This is in addition to an increasing trend of unexpected temporary ED closures and reductions of services across the country.

Longevity of Partial and Complete Dentures

Details

Question(s)

  1. What is the clinical evidence on the longevity of removable complete dentures?
  2. What is the clinical evidence on the longevity of removable plastic partial dentures?
  3. What is the clinical evidence on the longevity of removable metal partial dentures?

Key Message

  • Removable complete dentures may last for an average of 10.06 years, with most complete dentures lasting for at least 5 years.
  • Most metal partial dentures may last for at least 5 years.
  • We did not identify any studies that met inclusion criteria for our report describing the longevity of removable plastic partial dentures.
  • The included studies did not report populations, interventions, and outcomes clearly or consistently. This made some of the findings difficult to interpret.

Automatic Stop Orders for Opioids

Details

Question(s)

  1. What is the clinical effectiveness of automatic stop orders for opioid prescriptions?
  2. What are the evidence-based guidelines regarding the use of automatic stop orders for opioid prescriptions?

Key Message

Automatic stop orders may reduce or have no significant effect on opioid-based prescriptions at the institutional level.

We did not find any evidence regarding a range of clinical outcomes (e.g., rates of opioid dependence, misuse, and diversion; reduction in opioid dependence, health-related quality of life, and adverse events) associated with automatic stop orders.

We did not find any evidence-based guidelines regarding the use of automatic stop orders for opioid prescriptions.

Given the limited number and observational, nonrandomized design of the included studies, as well as the absence of any evidence-based guidelines regarding the use of automatic stop orders for opioid prescriptions, it was difficult to draw any firm conclusions about the clinical effectiveness of automatic stop orders for opioid prescriptions in the Canadian context.

Nabilone for the Treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: A 2023 Update

Details

Question(s)

  1. What is the clinical effectiveness of nabilone for the treatment of posttraumatic stressdisorder (PTSD) in adults?
  2. What are the evidence-based guidelines regarding the use of nabilone for the treatment ofPTSD in adults?

Key Message

One relevant systematic review of high methodological quality did not include any randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the effectiveness of nabilone for the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

We did not find any evidence-based guidelines on the use of nabilone for adults with PTSD.

Risk of Sexual Transmission of HIV With Antiretroviral Therapy and Variable or Suppressed Viral Load

Details

The absolute risk of HIV transmission through sexual activity, reported as incidence rates of observed seroconversions across person-years of follow-up, ranged widely across the included studies of sex partners living with HIV with variable (or unreported) viral loads.

Two studies included sex partners living with HIV with suppressed viral loads of fewer than 200 copies/mL, reporting no phylogenetically linked seroconversions in either study.

Optimizing the Use of Iodinated Contrast Media: Conservation Strategies Used Across Canada During the 2022 Shortage

Details

This report summarizes information collected through a survey on the strategies used across Canada to conserve ICM supplies during the shortage, including:multidispensing practices used in medical imaging and pharmacy departments to conserve ICM supplydilution practices in medical imaging departments used to extend ICM supplychanges in ICM volumes used before and after the shortagethe adoption of other ICM conservation strategies (including weight-based dosing or using alternative imaging modalities). The report also explores the survey respondents’ perceived impact of reducing ICM volumes o

Drug Safety and Effectiveness Data Access

Details

In recent years, the volume and variety of health-related data have increased exponentially; however, integrating evidence to inform decisions about the safety and effective of use of drugs depends on having timely access to fit for purpose data.

Dental Sealants for the Prevention of Dental Caries

Details

Question(s)

  1. What are the evidence-based guidelines regarding the use of dental sealants for the prevention of dental caries in children and adolescents?

Key Message

  • Three guidelines recommend the use of dental sealants to prevent or manage dental caries in children and adolescents. Sealants may be used as a preventive measure upon the eruption of molars, or as treatment to arrest or reverse noncavitated carious lesions. Sealants may be used alone or in combination with other treatments that protect against tooth decay.
  • Overall, the guidelines were rigorous, comprehensive, and clearly reported, but there were gaps in guidance about implementation, choice of sealant material, and selection of patients.
  • There is a need for methodologically rigorous guidelines on dental sealants for the prevention of dental caries that are developed for use in Canadian settings.
